All the Error

Goal:
Complete your lab report.

Agenda:
Kahoot
Outline
Write
Review

Kahoot
Go to Kahoot and get ready to review reliability and validity.

Outline
On whiteboards, list all of the evidence you have available for errors in your experiment.

  • Examples: not enough trials, high %RSD, visual observations of your setup
  • Nonexamples: human error, calculation error, measuring wrong

Write
Finish your report by writing your PE paragraph. It should be in the form of a CERER. Be sure to include AT LEAST two sources of error.

Review
Using the rubric on your table, give yourself a score on your completed lab report. Write your score and reasoning on the provided paper.

Write CER

Goal:
Write a CER based on your lab data.

Agenda:
Warmup
Outline
Write
Revise

Warmup
Go to Socrative and answer the question: What factors might affect the rate of cellular respiration?

Outline
Work with your elbow partner to outline your claim, evidence, and reasoning. When we make our claim we want to GENERALIZE what the data says about cellular respiration and use REASONING that is connected to scientific concepts.

Write
Write you CER silently.

Revise
Trade your lab report with your partner. Partner please highlight the following:

  • Claim - Red
  • Evidence - Green
  • Reasoning - Yellow
Discuss 1 strength and 1 weakness of the CER you read with your partner.
Revise your CER based on commentary.

Data Collection and Representation

Goal:
Collect and represent your lab data in both a table and a graph with appropriate labels and units.

Agenda:
Create-A-Table
Finish Lab
Make Graphs
Complete Data/Observations and Results

Create-A-Table
If you haven't already, make a data table in Excel for your independent and dependent variables. Make sure to include:
  • Labels and Units
  • All Trials
  • Statistics (if you have multiple trials)
    • Average
    • %RSD: Standard Deviation/Average x100
Finish Lab
  1. Collect your lab measurements and record them in the Excel table you created.
  2. Clean up from the lab. Test tubes in the glass disposal, beakers washed and put on the gray shelves.
Make Graphs
  1. Review different types of graphs and when to use them on this website.
  2. Graph your data. Refer to the graphs you made on 1/11 to make sure you have all of the components of a good graph.
Complete Data/Observations and Results
  1. Copy and paste the table and graph from Excel into your lab report Google Doc.
  2. Write a caption for your graph identifying and describing any patterns you see in the graph.

Pea Lab Take 2

Goal:
Complete the Background and Materials/Methods sections of your lab report.

Agenda:
Lab Cleanup
Copy Procedures
Set Up Experiments
WORK

Lab Cleanup
Take care of this place and take pride in YOUR lab space! We need to inventory the drawers, wash and put away all unused glassware, and wipe down the benches.

Copy Procedures

  1. Copy the procedures you wrote into your lab report under the Materials and Methods heading.
  2. Make sure to add the data collection step if you haven't already. We will go over this as a class.
  3. Under the Data and Observations heading, add a blank table for data collection on Monday. Your table should include:
    1. Independent Variable
    2. Dependent Variable
    3. Units (as applicable)

Set Up Experiments
Set up your experiment, following your procedure, to run over the weekend.

WORK

  1. Finish your Background
  2. Edit your Materials and Methods section as needed.
  3. Complete the "Process" piece for the Planning 2 badge.
    1. Upload your experiment plan as the artifact.
    2. Write a text reflection. Imagine yourself a year from now needing to plan an experiment. Explain to yourself how to use the experiment plan document to create a new experiment.

Writing Your Intro

Goal:
Write an introduction to your lab report.

Agenda
Set Up Soaking
Review Cellular Respiration
How to Write an Intro
Write!
Self-Score

Set Up Soaking
Take 5-10 minutes to set up your seeds to soak for tomorrow. Make sure to:
  • Label the beakers with the type of seeds and your initials.
  • Store the beakers INSIDE YOUR DRAWER so no one messes with them.

Review Cellular Respiration
With your table group answer the following questions on whiteboards:
  1. Who or what does cellular respiration?
  2. Why is cellular respiration needed?
  3. What are the products and reactants of cellular respiration (words and equation)?
  4. How does your research help heal the world, fuel the world, feed the world, and restore and protect the environment?

How to Write an Intro
Follow along as Mrs. Wallace demonstrates her writing routine.

Write!

  1. In google docs, go to "Shared with Me" and open the cellular respiration report document I made for you.
  2. SILENTLY write your introduction in that google doc.

Self-Score
Using the provided rubric, highlight where you fall on the rubric. On the back describe what you can do to make your intro better.

Protocol Writing

Goal:
Write a protocol to answer your research question.

Agenda
What makes a good procedure?
Finish Experiment Design Plan
Critique Experiment Design Plan

What makes a good procedure?
With your tablemates, brainstorm the characteristics of a good procedure. Share with the class.

Finish Experiment Design Plan
Using the guidelines for a good procedure, write a procedure that answers your research question in your experiment design plan.

Critique Experiment Design Plan
Trade your procedure with the group across from you. Using the guidelines for a good procedure, provide suggestions for improvement. You may write directly on their document.

Plan Cellular Respiration Experiment

Goal:
  • Ideate and plan a research question from research or wonderings (nerdy delight).
  • Select your own independent, dependent, and constant variables to answer your research question.
  • Select your own controls or standards to answer your research question.
Agenda
Warmup
Review
Experiment Design Plan

Warmup
Grab a whiteboard. With your table group, brainstorm every variable in the pea lab (independent, dependent, and constant).

Review
Review the Experiment Design Vocab on Quizlet.

Experiment Design Plan
  1. Generate a research question with your table group. Your question should be about cellular respiration in living organisms.
  2. Complete the experiment design plan with your elbow partner to answer your research question.
  3. At the end of class, turn it in to me. Make sure your name is on it.

Summarize Cellular Respiration

Goal:
Prove that you understand the why, what, and how of cellular respiration.

Agenda:
Videos
Make a Puzzle

Videos
Watch these two videos to get a better idea about cellular respiration.

Make a Puzzle
You and your partner are going to challenge the people across from you. Your task it to make a crossword puzzle (not a word search) about cellular respiration. This is to prove you know why it happens, what it is, and how it works. You will then trade puzzles with the other team at your table and see if you can solve theirs.

  1. Go to Puzzle Maker and work with your partner to make a crossword puzzle.
  2. Print 1 copy of your crossword puzzle (printer is C211-212).
  3. Trade puzzles with the people across from you to see if you all really know cellular respiration.
